Who are you, really?

How would you answer the question Who are you? Would you answer with what kind of person you are? Would the answer be that you are someone's sister, mom, or wife? Or would your answer be related to the kind of job that you do?

Most likely, it would be related to the kind of job that you do or in reference to another person, but we rarely answer the question with who we really are. Do you agree?

In today's society, the type of job that we do seems to have more weight than knowing who the person is. There is nothing wrong with answering how we spend most of our time, however, we are not really answering the question because what we do for living doesn't say who we are. Could it be that we skip the answer because we don't know who we really are? Or maybe we are afraid of showing who we really are because of fear of judgment or rejection?

Those questions have to be answered by each of us individually. But, the real question is, who are you, really?

If you have a hard time thinking of who you are, don't be hard on yourself. I would say that society, our way of living, the rapid changing times, and the feeling of belonging have not helped us stop and connect with who we really are. Although, that is not an excuse, these factors have played a big role on making us believe and act differently from who we are. Isn't that crazy? It feels like we are disconnected from our own essence. If you feel a level of disconnection with yourself, there is never too late to reconnect.

You don't know where to start? How about stopping for a moment and going over the following ideas. If you feel that writing things down will help you, even better! I personally recommend to write things down and take the time to reconnect. If you don't feel like writing, then think about each idea as you go. There is no right or wrong answer.

  • List different characteristics of yours
    • What makes you unique?
    • What type of communication do you enjoy?
    • What is your love language?
    • What type of things do you like?
    • What is the environment in which you thrive?
  • Spend time with yourself in silence. Start with 1 minute and increase with time.
  • List the things you value. Write your top ten values and write them in order of importance.
  • What are your passions, what do you enjoy doing? When was the last time you did any of the things you listed?
  • Connect with yourself constantly
    • Check if what you do makes you feel good
    • Are you being really you?
    • Are you saying yes when you wanted to say no?
    • Are you doing something just to please others?
    • What makes you laugh?

After you have gone through these ideas, do you feel more connected? Do you feel stronger and ready to answer the initial question? I would love to hear if this exercise helped you. Feel free to leave me a comment.
