There is never too late to start being aware.
Is your health deteriorating and you don't want to admit it? When you know something is wrong with your health and you don't want to admit it and you continue doing the same things you have always done hoping for your health to miraculously improve; that is living in denial.
We refuse to admit the reality, the things we used to eat without problems now cause us discomfort, the activities in which we used to get involved now look like a big challenge for our physical condition. Walking the dog sounds painful and planning a vacation in the wild doesn't sound feasible.
We hope to find a magic cure that doesn't require change and we don't want to admit that our declining bodies are enough reason for us to do something about it. Why is it that we don't want to change our ways and continue punishing ourselves with unhealthy habits? If we know we have to do something, why don't we do it?
I am tempted to say, it is because we like our comfort zone. We are good with what we know. Besides, opening to new things is frightening and require us to alter our routine. With this idea, we remain where we are and even when our body is desperate trying to communicate us something, we ignore it and continue living in denial.
The problem is that living in denial does not help. When your body is in pain, or you have a rash, or migraines, or any other sign of alert, it is because something is not right. If you continue to ignore it things can get worse. If you wait for others to do something, not only are you passing them the control of your life, but others don’t know your body as well as you do. So, why not take charge of your own health?
I know it is not easy, and I am not here to tell what to do, but I would love for you to ask yourself the following questions:
What is important in my life?
Am I fulfilling the life I imagined I would have?
What will my life be like in a few years if I don’t change my habits?
Are my actions affecting the people I love?
I will leave you with that. If you decide it is time to do something about your health and are not sure how to start, then reach out for help. Find support in your friends and family. If you feel you need help beyond your circle, find a professional who can support you and guide you to establish better habits. Get your power back!
