How do I start?

When you have a goal of becoming a healthier person, imagining how that will look like can be very helpful. That image that you create in your mind, along with the feeling that it brings with it, acts as a guide and helps you manifest it more quickly. The challenge comes when you focus too much on what you want to accomplish, that causes you to freeze. You may not know how to start heading in that direction, you probably don't find the motivation, or deep inside of you, something is telling you that you don't deserve it and that you are destined to the life you have.

Don't feel bad. This thing of focusing on the end result and forgetting to enjoy the process is very common among us humans. Thinking that we don't deserve a good life is also a very common feeling that lives in our subconscious mind, maybe because we know our ancestors might have suffered in some way, or maybe because we know others are suffering. There are lots of things to analyze in our lives and that is probably a topic for another article. In this article I would like to give you some insight on how to take the first steps. I advice my clients that it doesn't matter how small of a step they take, but it is necessary to start moving in the direction that will get them to the life they want, a healthier life.

People move at different paces so please, do not compare yourself to anybody, even less to those who are making great changes at a high speed. You are not them. You have your own pace and you need to honor it. Staying in the same spot for years and years is not an option if you really want to feel healthier, stronger, and happier as you age.

So, how do you start? I want to say that the process is simple because it is. Get your excuses out of the way and commit to yourself to do ONE little thing. For example, if you want to feel stronger, make a commitment with yourself to:

  • park further away from the grocery store entrance, or
  • walk to check your mailbox instead of stopping by in your car when you come back from work, or
  • take the stairs whenever possible, or
  • if you are not the one in the family walking the dog, tag along or take turns.

There is always something you can do. Whatever you decide to do can be as small or as big as you want. Just enjoy the process and move forward. Whenever you feel like the little guy on your shoulder is trying to talk you into not doing what you said you were going to do, shake it off! Don't think why you are, or you are not doing something, just do it.
